Abstract: The collection of poems “The Occasions” by Eugenio Montale is dedicated to Irma Brandeis, his muse known as Clizia. The poems are ordered according to an inner logic. The article reconstructs the chronological order of the poems, linking them with the events in the life of the Poet. The path highlights the evolution of Montale’s thought in the period between the two world wars and reveals his intellectual and human labor. The “sure fi re” of Clizia, who embodies the myth of the woman as saviour, bearer of love and positive values of life, appears as the only hope of salvation from the “uncertain tedium” of man immersed in the chaotic and reckless fl urry of men-goats.
